The story

It was one of those summer sunsets that feels too perfect to last—warm light spilling across the prairie with a storm building fast behind it. Bison are one of my favorite animals to photograph, and this moment gave me only a narrow window. The sun was dropping, the wind was rising, and the first sheets of rain were already sweeping in. Bison are one of the few animals that will walk toward a storm, pushing through it to get to the calm on the other side. She did exactly that—steady and unbothered—while the gusts came hard. One blast of wind kicked up a tumbleweed and pinned it across her face like nature’s own veil. I had just a few minutes to frame it and press the shutter before the light vanished. That mix of urgency, power, and quiet resilience is why this remains one of my favorite captures of my career.
